Major Projects Management Office is Open for Business

By Hassan Hamdan

Guests from industry and environmental organizations, First Nations representatives, and staff from federal departments and agencies recently gathered to witness the opening of NRCan's new Major Projects Management Office (MPMO) in Ottawa. The Honourable Gary Lunn, Minister of Natural Resources, along with Philip Jennings, Assistant Deputy Minister of the MPMO, spoke about some of the goals and objectives that they have set out.

“This project has been a long time in coming, and it will benefit our country for years,” said Minister Lunn. “The Major Projects Management Office will provide oversight and project management for resource projects as they proceed through the federal regulatory approval process. I look forward to seeing the difference that the MPMO will make in improving our regulatory system, protecting the environment and strengthening the competitiveness of Canada's resource industries.”

One of the many focuses of the MPMO will be to provide openness, accountability and collaboration throughout the federal review of projects. The improvements in process clarity will benefit all stakeholders, from industry proponents to local people most directly affected by resource developments.

Additionally, the MPMO will play an important role in the Government of Canada's approach to the review of major resource projects.

“It will foster regulatory innovation and excellence, with the goal of improving the management and performance of the federal environmental assessment and regulatory process for major resource projects,” explains Mr. Jennings. By minimizing unnecessary delays and increasing coordination, the regulatory review process will become more efficient and effective.

“The MPMO is a whole of government initiative. With the support of all government agencies, I have no doubt that the MPMO will succeed,” Minister Lunn concluded.
